This couple wasn’t even trying to get pregnant when they struck gold with a rare set of quadruplets! The parents now share their children’s growth and milestones via social media, prompting a wide range of reactions.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2024, Mother’s Day arrived early for a couple when their four healthy identical babies were born in Houston, Texas. As the children grew, their distinct appearances sparked numerous discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mercedes’ Unexpected Pregnancy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When Mercedes Sandhu found out she was pregnant again<\/a>, it wasn’t planned. Jonathan Sandhu’s wife admitted<\/a>, “We weren’t trying by any means, but we were excited.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her pregnancy initially seemed typical. Already caring for two young boys, Luke, three, and Aaron, 18 months, Mercedes told Jonathan he could skip the routine seven-week ultrasound. Her husband, then 37, recalled<\/a> with a laugh, “Mercedes had said, it’s our third kid, it’s seven weeks, don’t worry about going.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, that appointment turned out to be anything but ordinary! Instead of one baby, Mercedes learned she was carrying identical babies! Their initial excitement quickly turned into shock when they discovered they were expecting not one, but four babies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Holy moly!” she exclaimed<\/a>. Jonathan echoed the sentiment, a phrase that has now become part of their everyday vocabulary. Mercedes, who was 34 at the time, recalled, crying and laughing simultaneously while experiencing a range of emotions, but mainly shock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Manisha Gandhi, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist, and Mercedes’ doctor, shared<\/a>, “They both wanted numbers,” referring to the couple’s reaction to the news. The Sandhus used their engineering backgrounds to help process the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s really, really rare. And that’s all I keep saying because I don’t have good numbers… it’s just extremely rare,” Gandhi recalled telling<\/a> them. When they overcame the initial shock, choosing names for four daughters required extra planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The couple had previously used a baby-name app that matched preferences like a dating site, but this time they turned to a more practical method: a spreadsheet. “For this round, it wasn’t as helpful, so we just kind of tossed it out,” Jonathan explained<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the pregnancy progressed, doctors closely monitored it due to its high-risk nature. Gandhi noted that monochorionic pregnancies, where babies share a placenta, carry greater risks, especially when the blood supply isn’t evenly distributed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the final week, Gandhi became concerned that one baby wasn’t receiving enough blood, which prompted the decision to deliver early. “Because it’s a monochorionic pregnancy, if something affects one, it can really quickly affect the others,” she explained<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What We Know About Monochorionic Births<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to the journal Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology (ISUOG), having monozygotic, monochorionic quadruplets<\/a> is “extremely rare,” with an estimated occurrence of only one in 10 to 15 million pregnancies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So far, only one published case has included a detailed ultrasound analysis of the shared placenta with a successful outcome for all babies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Having quadruplets makes the pregnancy a high risk for complications, so it’s important to have close follow-up and a team that’s equipped to handle any adverse events that may come up,” said<\/a> Dr. Layan Alrahmani, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist and a member of the BabyCenter Medical Advisory Board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Identical quadruplets form when a single fertilized egg splits into four embryos. These babies share the same DNA, are always the same sex, and often look alike, although each can develop a distinct personality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
